Astronaut Discloses Depression After Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
