Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio
The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded ten goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?
Had their campaign falling apart, or was there ever a thread holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence
At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
