Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
